about

“Pursuit” is Free Planet Radio’s fifth full length album and most jazz-themed. The band’s first two releases made the trio’s signature sound distinct amid world-music groups and drew a faithful and engaged audience to them. After that, they began launching musically thematic bodies of work, showcasing the versatility of the players and the diversity of styles that have inspired them. FPR’s third album, “Global Symphony Project,” was both composed and arranged with big sound and the dynamic interplay of many instruments in mind, with pieces meant to be played with orchestral symphonies and string quartets. Conversely, their fourth album, Stillness, takes a minimalistic approach, featuring a meditative collection of sound explorations gently unraveling along subtle melodic storylines while drawing the listener inwards towards a still point and implied silence. Now they are swinging the pendulum to the opposite end. “This collection of songs has more of a feeling of action,” according to composer, Chris Rosser. The new album is the band’s most jazzy collection of songs to date. It includes two tracks, “Monkey Stride,” and “Free Sphere,” that are a direct nod to legendary jazz pianist, Thelonious Monk.

While Chris Rosser, Eliot Wadopian, and River Guerguerian are the three artists who make up the core of Free Planet Radio, they are also known for frequently collaborating with top notch artists of all different musical genres. “Pursuit” features an entourage of impressive guest musicians, including saxophonist, Jacob Rodriguez, who currently tours with Michael Bublé; Duncan Wickel, who tours with Rising Appalachia, on violin and cello; and both Ginger Kowal (violin) and Kara Poorbaugh (viola) from Opal String quartet, with whom they have previously recorded.

Some of the time spent composing new work for the CD and most of the recording sessions for it were funded by the North Carolina Arts Council Composer Fellowship. “The grant really helped make the album possible, because you can’t really do a fundraiser or count on album sales for a jazz album,” says Chris Rosser. The cohesive vision and composition of this body of work also allowed some songs that they have been playing with and performing for years, such as “Dabayo,” to finally find an appropriate framework within an album. Another unique quality of the upcoming release is the use of “less overdubs than our other albums, so it captures more of the essence of what we sound like live,” according to the band’s bassist and two-time Grammy Award winner, Eliot Wadopian.
