about

For over a decade, Free Planet Radio has been bringing its exciting and innovative world-jazz-classical music blend to both concert stages and classrooms. For their third release, the trio expands its global sound with the addition of the virtuosic Opal String Quartet. The album opens with the Bollywood-inspired “Backyard Bhangra”, followed by the engaging middle Eastern melodies and odd meter grooves of “Ecstatic Verses.” This three movement piece was commissioned for the ensemble by the prestigious Chamber Music America, and inspired by the poetry of Rumi. The haunting modal jazz harmony of “Doctor Zhombus,” leads into the impressionistic rhythmic explorations of “City Nature.” Featuring the trio without strings, “Hamza” pays tribute to the late Nubian oud legend, Hamza El-Din. “Hijaz Mandra” closes out the recording with a traditional Turkish folk melody in a lively 7/8 meter.
